Feathering in Hardwoods
/We are refinishing our floors AND feathering in new ones to make them look like they fit and I thought I’d share about the process.
We are using red oak 2.25” from Weaber lumber to match our original hardwoods. We didn’t refinish the hardwoods when we moved in because we knew we’d like to add hardwoods to the kitchen and it would all need to happen at once. Well…now is the time!
Here you can see how bad the floors look and the start of the feathering process.
Here Philip looked for the seam of the wood and took out whole old boards so that the new boards would look seamless.
Quick reminder of what the floors looked when we purchased the home…
After removing the original linoleum and subfloor, Philip laid an underlayment that provides a vapor barrier and helps with a sound barrier. We had an extra layer because the original owners wanted the linoleum to be flush with the hardwoods.
We removed spare boards until they looked like this…We don’t have to do this when the floors meet the hardwoods (as pictured on the right).
Next, Philip started incorporating the new boards.
Once they are all laid, we refinished all the hardwoods together.
Here is a look at the room with new hardwoods!
